PONTEFRACT LIQUORICE FESTIVAL

The sweetest festival of the year

Held in mid July, this annual celebration of contemporary culture, arts and heritage is inspired by Pontefract's uniquely famous product - liquorice.

Since 1999, Faceless has worked closely with the Pontefract Liquorice Trust to develop what was once a local fair into a regionally significant event with increasing national and international interest. The festival began as a one day event but now spans two weekends in July.

Preceded by an extensive participatory arts programme, Faceless programmes and delivers an action packed festival which brings to life the cobbled town streets, ancient ruined castle and former Victorian Mill gardens. The event kicks off with themed parade and features international street artists, live music, craft market, outdoor theatre, workshops, exhibitions and heritage.

The Liquorice Festival model, with its firm rooting in the community and growing trans-national links, is often used as an example of good practise at events and festivals conferences across the world.
